Autumn Treasures in Montefegatesi: Mushroom and Chestnut Season

When autumn colors paint the hillsides of Montefegatesi in shades of gold, amber and rust, the forest floor comes alive with hidden treasures. There are wild mushrooms and chestnuts waiting to be discovered. This is one of the most enchanting times to visit our corner of Tuscany, when crisp mountain air, wood smoke and the earthy scent of fallen leaves fill the winding paths that surround the village.

Mushroom lovers can follow local trails through chestnut groves and shaded woodland, where porcini and other varieties grow in abundance after the first autumn rains. Gathering them is more than a pastime,  it is a cherished tradition, often followed by a hearty meal shared with friends and family. Many local restaurants also feature freshly foraged mushrooms on their seasonal menus, giving visitors a true taste of the area’s autumn delight.

Equally loved are the sweet chestnuts that drop from the trees each October. Families gather to collect them, filling baskets before roasting them on open fires or taking them home to bake, grind into flour or use in soups and cakes.

The annual chestnut festivals in nearby villages celebrate this local harvest with music, dancing and delicious treats.

Chestnuts are freely available in the forest at Montefegatesi in Autumn.
